GLOBAL CONFRONTATION

So what is it about the world of Alan Butler? Simple, his work confronts the way we experience global culture.

Working in no particular medium, his artistic and curatorial projects have dealt with various ways of interpreting, critiquing and experiencing culture.

Through the appropriation of ubiquitous third-party materials, much of his produce becomes iconoclastic. The work remixes cultural artefacts and icons, taking materials that possess specific lineages and combining them with other disparate lineages to create new ideas and manufactured ‘truths’.

These different elements tie together in a convoluted and often absurd narrative. The artworks generally aim to be mildly humourous and toy with the idea of authorship and viewing.

Ultimately his work dismantles notions of concrete or universal meaning in any information, leaving all ideas open to further remixing and evolutionary processes.

Alan is an inter-disciplinary artist currently based in Dublin. He has exhibited his work in Europe, the USA and Asia. His curatorial projects have included exhibitions for the Dublin Fringe Festival, the Dublin Art Fair ‘08, Temple Bar Gallery & Studios and Monster Truck Gallery & Studios.

He is a founding member of the Irish contemporary art community website Blackletter.ie, has written texts/essays for various exhibition catalogues and has lectured in fine art at the National College of Art & Design.

Most recently he exhibited his work at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Singapore. In 2010, Alan will take up a studio occupancy in Temple Bar Gallery & Studios, Dublin where he is preparing work for exhibitions and publications starting in February with a group show at École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris.
