Skinny Wolves present Lucky Dragons at the Joy Gallery

Dublin’s ‘Skinny Wolves’ have been disseminating sometimes experimental, always-interesting music for over three years and in that time have brought artists like No Age, Gang Gang Dance, Effi Briest, Mahjonng and White Magic to our attention and city. This year feels like it could be the year of the wolf, in part because they have some stellar gigs coming up (Lucky Dragons, Wavves, Crystal Stilts, Shooting Spires) and in part because they are stellar people. With their imminent ‘Lucky Dragons’ gig, Jamie and Peter have decided to explore a less traditional space in the brilliant Joy Gallery, looking to create a different kind of experience, where it truly is all about the music and building a kind of community.

‘Lucky Dragons’ are the perfect band to bring to The Joy Gallery, because their music transcends a conservative idea of performance, since the LA duo of Luke Fischbeck and Sarah Rara make the ordinary sound intriguing and their sounds and video projections are created in collaboration with the audience. Fischbeck has previously said that the whole idea behind ‘Lucky Dragons’ is to change what it means to be a band and projects for the Whitney Biennial and their weekly collaborative “drawing society” Sumi Ink Club, means they are succeeding. Their music, which spans over fifteen records, also spans genres, and though it definitely uses post-punk as a touchstone, Fischbeck has suggested it is somewhere between “political and healing” and the space they have created is exciting and most of all creative.

Skinny Wolves present ‘Lucky Dragons’ at The Joy Gallery, 2 Rutland Place, Dublin 1 on Sunday 25th January. Admission 10euros, doors 8pm, BYOB.
